Of course this is OT, but there is a big difference between Vietnam and the current situation. Quite a lot of American foreign policy can be construed as meddling in the politics of other countries: the Vietnam thing, trying to assassinate Fidel Castro, etc. Too many Americans perceived the enemy as being within the US; in hindsight, we've found that nearly organization and movement, regardless of their views, had their own dirty tricks. We had to deal with McNamara and Fonda. Kent State: the response was not appropriate for the situation. There is no question about that...but we had to deal with the Weather Underground too. The difference is the murder of 6,000 civilians, and the numerous other asymmetrical attacks in the last 20 years (doesn't 9/11/2001 make you wonder about TWA 800?). This is attempted genocide and nothing more. You might be surprised (or terrified) by the number of people with concealed-carry permits. The police carry loaded weapons, and armed soldiers guard military installations. We've seen how airplanes with fuel and innocents can become weapons; why shouldn't we guard airplanes too? Osama's boys aren't coming to come chanting, "Give peace a chance." In this situation, unloaded weapons will get more people killed. I'll bet the firing pins are in and the magazines are full. I doubt the weapons are cocked, but it doesn't take long to handle that one. -----Original Message----- From: midrange-l-admin@midrange.com [mailto:midrange-l-admin@midrange.com]On Behalf Of Michael.Clinch@state.sd.us Sent: Tuesday, October 23, 2001 9:36 AM To: midrange-l@midrange.com Subject: RE: COMMON Update... Is this what the 4 protestors thought at Kent State also. I know the Guard there over reacted. > -----Original Message----- > From: Portal39@aol.com [mailto:Portal39@aol.com] > Sent: Tuesday, October 23, 2001 8:31 AM > To: midrange-l@midrange.com > Subject: Re: COMMON Update... > > > -- > [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] > SOME IDIOT IS GOING TO CHALLANGE THE NATIONAL GUARD AND GET > THEIR ASS IN > TROUBLE, AT BEST. > > MANY OF THEM ARE FISTY WEEKEND WARRIORS , NOT WANTING TO BE THERE > > > > A.
