Database VARLEN fields are limited to 32740 bytes (32739 if null-capable) and IIRC they use a 2-byte length and require 24 overhead bytes to track the variable portion (i.e., the part that overflows the allocated length). I believe I've provided information about the overhead bytes in the past. It is likely to be in the archives.
