If I recall correctly, %LEN always sends the length of the field, not the data. To calculate the length of the data, I believe you can say %LEN(%TRIMR(<field name>)). This is what I do when I want the length of the data in fixed length fields, but I've never messed with variable length fields. Hope that helps. Donald R.
