Dear Mike, The OS/400 operating system uses the industry standard LPR protocol to send spool files to remote printers that are defined as Remote Output Queues. It assumes that the receiving LPD daemon service (running on a printer interface or on a host server) will be able to interpret requests that are included in an instruction file (known as an LPR control file) that are sent with the spool file. When you need the IBM iSeries or AS/400 host to produce the page range for you before sending the data to the target printer (a requirement when the target is a print server like an HP JetDirect), you will need to install the TSPRWPR exit program. Starting with OS/400 release V4R2, IBM has shipped the source for this exit program in the QUSRTOOL library. In order to create the object file that activates the utility, a C compiler was required. Frequently this requirement was a major stumbling block in regards to installing the tool. IBM now offers a method for retrieving the required components to install the tool from their web site http://www.as400service.ibm.com. From the main screen, choose Software Knowledge Base. Next you should choose Print and then collapse the tree. Click on the category Network Print from iSeries and then Remote Output Queues (RMTOUTQs). The document titled TSPRWPR Remote Writer Page Range Support Exit Program includes all of the instructions required to install the tool on an AS/400 or iSeries 400 host. Good luck.
