Well, not exactly "not advertising". IBM is much smarter than that: by
spending a lot of money on ineffectual advertising, they spend the money (a
lot of advertising expenses can be expensed, thus reducing taxable income)
and get no results (no additional sales, thus keeping income depressed).

Of course, IBM could also spend more on direct customer support (how about
WebSphere and WDT/400 hotlines?); this would increase expenses. They could
cut prices or boost price/performance; this would depress revenue.

The lawyers making these decisions are almost certainly staff...something
out of the "Dilbert" comic strip comes to mind. When you look at everything
in the iSeries world, a pattern does not emerge. A reasonable conclusion is
that the Mid-Market Server Group is a tactical, not strategic, weapon in the
overall Big Blue plan. And it's too bad...

Al RISC models support these releases. On the V5R1 announcement, IBM did
announce that V5R2

(yes they did mention it, although the [brain dead] IBM lawyers are denying
it, but then again those lawyers do need an excuse to overcharge IBM. It;s
a strategy consistent with not advertising the 400, to reduce corporate
income taxes.)

They said that models 4xx and 5xx will not run V5R2.

According to an iSeries Planning website
(http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/support/planning/futurehdw
r.html):

    AS/400 Models 436, 40S, 500, 510, 530, 50S, 53S
will not be supported by OS/400 releases after V5R1.

What about the model 400 (types 9402 & 9404)? Can I presume that this
model was dropped prior to V5R1? Can anyone point me to the appropriate
source of information? I looked in the V5R1 System Handbook and found
no references to this information.
