If you decide to create your own functions (e.g., via sockets programming), I suggest you start with contacting the iCTC (IBM's Custom Technology Center) to see if they'll still supply their TCP/IP Sockets API package. It was still free for the basic client-side APIs last year. I used those on V3R2 to write a POP client in CL (!) and even a very basic SMTP client. I have no problem using the iCTC APIs even on current releases, but I've long since graduated to doing my own. They are great for prototyping and for learning what various TCP/IP applications expect. They're actually pretty good even for production stuff.
