There's nothing 'wrong' with using a network hub. It is just if you are looking for the best network performance, replacing hubs with switches really works. Hubs are an extension of Ethernet and as such, all network communications are shared and seen by all the devices on the hub. Switches bridge connectivity between the ports (layer 3 switch can route traffic between ports), sending only the traffic that belongs on each leg. So, if the 400 is on a switched port, it only sees the traffic destined for the 400. On a hub, the 400 sees all the traffic along with it own. More devices, more traffic, more network collisions, and the hub creates one big collision zone. Switches segment out the network, creating a collision zone for each port.
