There have been many thoughtful answers to your question already. We've
found many  AS/400 shops happy with a sockets interface. It's pretty easy to
program to and performs really well. From the web site you can do sockets
from Java, CGI, Perl, etc. A good firewall implementation protects the
AS/400 from unwanted access.

One other option to consider is IBM's MQSeries middleware product (recently
renamed Websphere MQ). If you wanted to completely avoid a TCP connection
between the AS/400 and web server this would give you that ability. It has
APIs that are probably a bit easier to program than sockets, is fast, and
supports a lot of application types (Java, CGI, VB, C++, etc.).
