After I posted, I did a few tests... it does not work.  As far as I know,
RPG does not support this either.  I remember way back in college (ok, 20
years ago, before there was any MIS or computer related degrees), this was a
nifty feature of PASCAL.  Every once in a while I have had the need in RPG.
Oh well, I guess I will find a work around, the code will not be nearly as
elegant.

I don't beleive so.
One thing you can do is change the value of a variable whose
name is held in another variable (not quite the same thing)...
