Your comments remind me of a former employer of mine.  They hired a manager
in the IT department to support desktop applications.  He was a PC guru,
smart and aggressive.  Soon afterwards he convinced senior management to
standardize all desktop suites to Microsoft Office.  Nobody could buy Corel
products, after that.  And most people got a copy of Access on their
desktops.  After that, he began formalized, structured training on the use
of Word, Excel, and Access.

It's interesting to note the profound change in culture that Microsoft has
had, and how it has influenced both access to and reporting of enterprise
data.
