Every once in a while, a great idea comes across on this list that gives me cause to slap myself upside the head. I've been toying with the idea of LAN console or that "other" console to support our remote AS/400s and have been hearing about the problems with these products (is it just Charly? Anybody else? How about some success stories with LAN Console - anyone?)
Chris, could you please describe your system console setup with a little more detail? Are you using an Emerald 5250 card? Instead of the PCAnywhere, we'd probably have to hook this up to our existing network. Well, silly question, but is PCAnywhere dialup-only, or does it support access via a network? It's been a while since I've worked with PCAnywhere.
The only thing I could see that we'd be missing from LAN Console if we went with 5250 emulation on the system console is the ability to access the iSeries system panel. This wouldn't be a *great* hinderance as 90% of what we'd use this for would be for functions that require a dedicated system, i.e. Save-21.

Mochasoft is $250.00 USD for an unlimited site license. A single PC can
connect to multiple AS400s. You can automate a silent install and
distribute via floppy. It also supports SSL 56bit. We use it here for all
users and CA Express for IS personal who need the other baggage. Check out
www.mochasoft.dk Of course this is not twinax. We have a 10+ year old
Emerald 5250 board. The old DOS software it comes with work under 95/98 as
well. Put that into a PC running something like PC Anywhere and hook up to
your AS400 as CTL01 port 01 switch 0. You now have a very dependable system
console that you can attach to remotely. Forget about the other crap that
IBM is supplying.
