Leif, I agree with you 100%.  Security through powerful keyed encryption
algorithms is the best (although of course a determined intruder gets in by
simply compromising your keys, perhaps through good old-fashioned
espionage).

However, a proprietary protocol between machines is a step up from
standardized, non-secure access.  When two machines on the internal network
are communicating, which is the case I am addressing - DMZ to production
machines - then a proprietary protocol is a good additional security
measure.  Certainly better than straight ODBC access.

Do you agree or disagree with that statement?

Encrypted communication between DMZ and production machines would be the
next level, and using it would depend on the sensitivity of your data, the
level of perceived threat, and the expense you're willing to shoulder.  How
easy is it to implement a triple-DES connection between two machines?  How
expensive?
