There is one benefit of hard copy publications that had just been
displayed by the demise of Midrange Computing.
Now that they're web site is gone you can't go look up that neat article
on that RPG subroutine for controlling a robot performing open heart
surgery that was published several months ago. They still don't send
lawyers around to your house to collect your old hard copy magazines when
a company goes under.

Oh - and it's easier to read your hardcopy magazine in the can than it is
to carry in your laptop, look for a LAN connection, and risk dropping it
in the bowl ! ;-)

I don't think so otherwise I had better close my business down.

Having used AS/400 Technology Showcase (Midrange Computing's European
offering) and News/400 as advertising media, Midrange came in a poor
second
in terms of response to our advertising spend. The quality of the
production by comparison was also archaic (Hello Magazine is better
produced
!!)

Whilst this may all sound bitter, I should stress that it is not. I have
no
axe to grind with Midrange. But in a commercial world that is getting
more
comfortable with the WWW and the benefits that it can offer over
hard-copy
publications, the publications have to work harder and be more innovative
to
offer "value-added" as well as high quality editorial. Midrange is a
casualty because it did not move with the times or the market.

The demise of a dinosaur does not signal the end of the land that it lived
off !
