It's not the software, most of the email software I have ever used gives you
the option to only send the reply only if a certain condition exists.  
It is the user that doesn't take to time to set it up properly. 

For example when I am going to be gone I set up a rule that says:  IF FROM
contains "@good-sam.com" then send the auto reply. Because there is no
reason anyone outside the compay should know I am gone.
