You'd think I'd know better than to even say anything on a subject such as this. But being that I am so naive I'm going to even be stupid and try to defend my position. For one that faults IBM quite a bit for the demise of OS/2 I never thought I would have it thrown in my face so much. The problem with the OS/2 example is that if I turn from naive to cynical then there are a huge slew of technologies that will soon be abandoned - Linux, SAN, LTO tape, PowerPC, XML, Java, etc. Hey, I love it - nothing is strategic. Secondly, while there are similarities I would suggest that the market dynamics between OS/2 and the AS/400 are very different. Equating them to be similar products or markets is not something I agree with. But if you want to go right ahead. Thirdly, how many things have been stated as strategic and have indeed turned out as such - RAID, Domino, RISC, etc? Ok, so I am naive and quote someone. But if I remove the ghost of OS/2 (or whatever other sore point someone has) then those statements coupled by the huge investments being made in OS/400 and DB2/400 just recently and in the foreseeable future might just stand for something. And if I remove my AS/400 only mentality for a while and step away from the microscope to get a broader view I might actually think that it's possible that by mentioning the benefits of NT and Unix serving is indirectly a compliment to OS/400. Oh well, I guess I shouldn't worry about such things. I've got things running on an AS/400 that shouldn't be evidently - GUI applications on Domino and Websphere Advanced, an extranet site, planned NT server consolidations and a desire to prepare for a Linux partition someday. All while keeping my green screen applications going. Damn what was I thinking....... Michael Crump Saint-Gobain Containers 1509 S.
