We have had our 3570 B01 for over 4 years now. We have had IBM maybe 2
times for repairs. Mostly cleaning the tracks that the tape transport rides
on. Had to replace the tracks and motor for the tape transport 6 months
ago. Other than that it has not skipped a beat.

We have two of them. One on a V5R1 machine and one on a V4R5 machine.
Both go down like a w!*%$ on a troop ship. We have the CE in here on a
daily basis, literaly.
V4R5MACHINE: Got CPF5110-Equipment check when switching volumes. And other
messages like MCH1668.
V5R1MACHINE: Got CPF4513-Timeout, MCH5204-Source/sink resource TAP03 not
available, MCH1668-System object TAP03 partially damaged, and more.
QSYSOPR on V5R1MACHINE had: CPI5922, CPF6797

And every 8 weeks we always apply the latest cum, and the latest group
ptf's for: Hiper, Database, Backup, etc.

Counting the minutes until our 3581's come in. When they do, give me a
jingle if you need 3570 tapes.
The 3581 has a higher capacity, but not the speed of the 3590. And, you
can always count on IBM having something sexier in the works.
That 3590 is fast. We changed a backup from a 25gb cartridge, (which is no
slouch) and we're impressed. I have historical data that can track the
changes from an earlier cartridge to a 25gb, from a 25gb to 3590, and a few
others. If anyone needs some real world comparisons for management buy in,
drop me a line. I will tell you, that the 3590 needs horsepower to drive
it to full rate. But we put it on a large bumblebee and are also
impressed.
