> Remember to watch out for the 64K compiled object size limit! You could get around the 64k limit to a certain extent by doing deliberate overlays, which means the program really needs 75k to execute but it swaps parts of itself out to disk when running - this means that for efficient processing you have to carefully arrange your subroutines so that what is swapped most of the time are the routines that are executed the least often. Recent memories of stuff I am glad I no longer have to muck with. There were lots of other ceilings. I had some programs in which I ran out of indicators, so I started using permutations, like Yes-1 No-2 Yes-3 Yes-4 No-5 had a specific meaning which was gastly to keep track of so it was just as well that I ran out of unique EXCPT scenarios & I also have a vague recollection that one program ran out of subroutines. Which is why we had to buy ASNA's 400/RPG which is RPG/400 for the S/36. However, I do not feel that the AS/400 programs from SSA are an improvement where the source code for a program runs to 1,000 pages before the external layouts are added & it calls 10 other programs of equivalent dimensions & every other line is a pointer to some code you have to look up some place else.
