Hi Jeff,

In Word97, when you Insert File, you get a dialog box allowing you to select
the file to be inserted.  On the right-hand side under the Advanced button
is a check box stating "Link to file". Make sure that's checked.

Also, there's a LINK field that looks a lot like the include instruction.
Look under Insert Field Links and References.
