This seems a great idea to me (maybe partly because my boss wants to do
this here, to cut down on the huge volume of paper we generate for no
apparent reason!).

I'll just add that (especially if you're dealing with text-only spool
files), there seem to be a number of tools out there to do this (meaning
you don't necessarily have to write  your own).  . .  .
