With all due respect to your opinions, I highlighted our areas of
disagreement in-line. (See >>)

Subject: i NATION ListServer Confusion/ownership

With all do respects to your good intentions - I'd say NO

>> I hope there's no harm in asking...:)

WHILE I think i NATION is a good thought, It is of IBM birth

>> IMHO it is IBM's creation, but it is still in the early stages of being
formed. Not unlike the Colonies around 1776.

and
activities under the iNATION flag

>> I know I'm taking this out of context to take what you say here
literally. But it provides an example: There is no iNation flag, of
course. And most people would probably agree the iNation wants to have a
flag. Now my question is: should the iSeries Community sit around and wait
for IBM to design it, or do they get together and present and idea or two to
IBM? This is a somewhat trivial example, but illustrates our differences.

and list should be fully forefilled by its'
owner, IBM .

>> I'm afraid we may have to agree to disagree on this one. IBM made a
subtle change to the "Voices" webpage on the iNation site, last Thursday.
It had been a list of quotes of people saying V5R1 was great. As I posted
over at ign_genlist-feed@ignite400.org:

>> "Now it says, in part: 'This will become a place to make your Voice
heard, providing a forum for your interests and for providing direct input
to IBM regarding iSeries technology, business initiatives, offers, events
and related issues that our Nation's citizens deem important.' " And I also
said: "It is not possible to overstate how amazing this statement is !"

>> If IBM will accept input from the Community, as it says here, then the
primary value of the iNation is going to be this input from the Community.
Not just from users, the combined input from the entire Community. IMHO,
that's going to be the strength of the iNation.

>> Now IBM may end up governing the iNation (and they may not). If they do,
I suppose you could say that they'll own the iNation.

>> But IMHO, if IBM literally ends up actually owning the iNation... Well
it won't live up to it's potential. Not by a long shot.

>> Evidently Mr. Duncan also believes this, because this is what he said in
an interview with NEWS/400 on 5/18:
(http://www.as400network.com/nwn/story.cfm?ID=10213) "Is it going to be
sustainable? It's got to be sustainable. How big will it get? It'll get as
big as the family, the community, embrace it." <snip> "This thing could be
huge."

>> I'd put the emphasis on the words "could be".

Another iNation list would confuse matters

>> Surely not at this point! IBM has no list. IBM hasn't provided the
infrastructure to deliver any way to communicate. Why wait until they put
one together?

>> Plus, I think there may be some value to a separate listserv, even after
IBM sets something up on the iNation website. Not only that, there's a lot
to be said in favor of Booth Martin's comment in his post on 5/20: "If there
is a serious discussion of i-Series Nation it can't be hosted by IBM..."

Anyhoo... Thanks for writing, Portal...;-) Gave me a chance to re-visit
that interview with Mr. Duncan, which I thought was absolutely fascinating.
(Thank you Cheryl Ross, and NEWS/400!)

All,

The good folks at IGNITe/400 (http://www.ignite400.org) have set up a new
listserv to "allow for the more generic eBusiness topics such as iNation to
be discussed" !

If you'd be interested, it's open to the public, and you can subscribe by
e-mailing ign_genlist-feed@ignite400.org !

The list has been silent so far, but you never know, this might turn into
something like an "iNation Advocacy Group".
