BSC comms is not the forerunner to EDI. EDI is a data standard, BSC is a comm standard. Lots of early EDI was communicated via BSC. BSC is still used for batch type transmission, mostly to EDI VANS, banks and the like. It is a synchronous method of comms (like SNA). Like any comm standard, you have to have modems that support the same standards, but that is not to say that BSC is any harder from an equipment standpoint to implement. BSC will run over standard V.32 synchronus modems. BSC is a pretty basic comm protocol. After a "handshake" the sender sends a block of data and the received sends an ack or nack depending of whether the CRC is correct. this back and forth process is continued until all the data is sent. This is a pretty simplistic example. BSC is more related to SNA and TCP/IP than it is to EDI. cjg Carl J. Basically Corporate HQ had S/36 & a remote site had S/34. There was a way to copy spool file reports into a data file. There was a way to copy the data file back into reports. Thanks to bi-synchronous communication HQ was able to print remote site reports such as inventory shortage listings & remote site was able to print HQ reports such as lists of new customer orders for the remote site to fulfil. As I recall & again this was eons ago, RPG had a T-specification, for telecommunications, which was a very simple, similar to L-spec in terms of how little had to be done. I think of bi-synchronous as being a fore-runner to EDI. A problem with bi-synchronous trading partners is you gotta have an awful lot of stuff at both ends that are identical - like modem standards. Although from a security standpoint a direct connect between you and ADP may sound better to management, using EDI standards through a 3rd party EDI service in the long run can be more economical to corporate budgets. > Sender: owner-midrange-l@midrange.com > > We are a financial institution that deals with a payroll company (ADP) in > sending and receiving data files.
