John,

Someplace recently I read the $100K figure as the low end of the mid-market.
I can't recall where I saw that, though, so I don't know if that's an
official number from IBM, or not.  I also wonder, like you do, what
percentage the under-$100K makes up.

I'd like to thank you, too, for the article on LPAR and PLIC.  Whew!  That
kind of stuff amazes me.  And it's another reason I'm glad the hardware and
OS come from the same folks.

The question that immediately springs to my mind is what do they consider a
mid-market buyer? I remember reading at some point in the past that IBM
carved up their server market as follows:

Enterprise - $1M +  (Machine size)
Mid-market - $100K - $1M
Small mkt  - up to $100K

Does anyone have anything official that defines those terms? I think it's
important to determine what IBM considers the small market, and what they
have planned for them. After all, would it not be fair to say that it
comprises a fair percentage of overall business for the BP's on this list?
That figure ($100K or less) makes up a big slice of the 170 model line.
