Dan,

To see what servers are running and what ones aren't you can run the 
NETSTAT command (on AS/400) and take option 3 to see what servers are 
running.  Some are self explanatory, others are not.  

As to the ones you need, kind of a guess.  AS-database does the file 
transfer part (non-IFS), Telnet the Display and Printer.  Most client 
programs want the as-svrmap running which will tell you the port of a 
given server if you request it by name (eg: you ask for the as-database 
server and it returns 8471 for the port),  another server you might 
want started is the as-signon.
