The stories in this thread bring to mind two things that are all too easy to
put off. First, each installation should have a Disaster Recovery Plan and
test it. It is real easy to say "We have every thing backed up." But when
was the last time you actually used it either in a test or in a real
business recovery situation? Second, each installation should go through an
audit. I believe that an audit should be performed by someone outside of
the IT department. This is the only way to get a truly objective review. A
good auditor for this type of work should have previous IT experience and
provide both criticism and positive advice. Banks are required by Federal
and State regulators to have EDP audits at least twice and sometimes once
each year. I just wonder how many IT department of companies in other
industries could stand the scrutiny of the audits that banks are put
through. A point to ponder is, how big of an impact did the problems in IT
contribute to the demise of the companies that have been the subject of
these horror stories.
