I agree with charly. I still use the command line on our windoz machines and the as400. GUI can actually cause you to do more clicking using the gizmo. In fact I think I may have trackball syndrone. I may file a workers comp claim. I have be noticing that my right index finger is getting sore from the scrolling. <VBG> Hoss -----Original Message----- From: Charly Jones [mailto:charly301@hotmail.com] Sent: Thursday, March 29, 2001 9:35 PM To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com Subject: Re: V5 Availability >From: Jon.Paris@hal.it > >I personally do not want IBM to produce green screen versions - >but I do want the APIs so that those who do want them can build them. > >Brad Stone's web server configuration tool comes to mind as an example. >If I have the APIs I can build whatever version my customer wants and (as >Charley has pointed out with his request) at least come up with some form >of scripting when I need to perform "bulk" operations. > "Scripting" (meaning a CL interface) is not just for bulk requests. It would allow us to put a task on a menu, or in a program, or in a batch file, or be able to accomplish something from the command line. Have you ever tried to talk someone through a GUI interaction? Uh... is there a little gizmo on the left? It says "update" or "make new" or something like that. No? Pull down the edit tab. There isn't an "edit" tab? Well click around and enjoy yourself a bit while I try to remember what the secret is to this particular video game... When you really get in trouble with a Microsoft operating system, you get on the command line and fix what you have to fix. But when you are trying to do something "new" (meaning something IBM has decided to abandon the CL interface for) on an e(logo)Server iSeries Model 38 + 400 you have to hope one of Microsoft's operating systems will let you do what you have to do. But it sure is cool to use a video game interface to my business computer...
