Leif,

Try msgid CPF9898, it's a message that accepts your text as it's
parameter data.

We use the following CL program (SNDSTSMSG):

 *************** Beginning of data *************************************
 /* ------------------------------------------------------------------*/
 /* SNDSTSMSG Send a status message to the screen */
 /* ------------------------------------------------------------------*/
  SNDSTSMSG:  PGM   PARM(&MSGDTA)

*
              DCL        &MSGDTA  *CHAR 70  /*  Status message text   */

              SNDPGMMSG  MSGID(CPF9898) MSGF(QCPFMSG) MSGDTA(&MSGDTA) +
                           TOPGMQ(*EXT) MSGTYPE(*STATUS)
              MONMSG     MSGID(CPF0000)

              ENDPGM /* End of program specifications */
 /* ------------------------------------------------------------------*/
 ****************** End of data ****************************************

This is used by calling command SNDSTSMSG:

*************** Beginning of data *********************************
             CMD        PROMPT('Send a status message')
             PARM       KWD(MSGTEXT) TYPE(*CHAR) LEN(70) MIN(1) +
                          EXPR(*YES)
****************** End of data ************************************

Within any other CL program you will find something like this:

 ----------------------------------------------------------
 SNDSTSMSG MSGTEXT('XXXXXXXX command is executing')
