You don't >need WebSphere for what I'm doing; Apache HTTP >server and the Tomcat servlet engine work just fine. ... >No, JSP/servlet is actually the BEST solution for the little >guy, because of its scalability. The ability to deploy an application to a Linux box is a great advantage of Java as a platform. Intel boxes win by a large margin in every price / performance statistic I've read. But, even this idea should be tempered by the complexity factor. The organization that develops and manages the dual platform solution may end up with a higher cost of ownership. On one level, both Java and ILE are separate platforms. And on another level, both Linux and OS/400 are separate platforms. There is enough of a knowledge, skill, and attitude distinction to require two sets of developers, and possibly even two sets managers. So, I see this solution working better in large organizations that can afford the complexity, or in a software development firm that targets a broad base of users. The "little guy" may benefit if the application is a pre-developed, turn-key solution.
