sorry, let me re-phrase (sorry it's so long),
AS400s can talk via ethernet or token ring, with STRPASTHR, DDM, etc,
without AnyNet. When most people say "over TCP", it usually means each 400
has TCP turned on (ip address assigned, etc). Ethernet can handle ip & sna.
However, if you have WAN routers, & route ip only, then AnyNet is required.
One of my customers has 30 or more AS400s, some
with TCP turned on, some not, some local, some WAN,
all ethernet, none with anynet, all capable of pass-thru,
send net files, DDM, & for the TCP enabled, also telnet &
ftp. The wan routers do the sna encapsulation into ip instead
of anynet (not sure which is better, anynet or sna capable router-both add a
layer of complexity that sometimes has problems).
A clear definition of the 400 config without anynet, in a couple pages is
redbook AS400 Communications Definitions Vol 2
and page 253-255 on my copy GG24-3763-00, the
chapter is SNA/Ethernet, LU 6.2 with AS400.
This is the line, controller, device. They left the mode
description off the page, which is important. Also, if this
is WAN, the timers on the controller need to be adjusted.
