RE: Web apps on the AS/400

And I am biased 180 degrees opposite.  I posted this recently on the Midrange 
Computing forums:

Absolutely the best development environment for web applications using AS/400 
data:

1. Java front end
2. RPG back end

I can now create an entire client/server master file maintenance application, 
with a view panel and a maintenance panel, in about 20 minutes. Once done, the 
skeleton program can then be edited to provide any level of error checking 
required.

I realize this is relatively simple, but it's the first application I've 
designed so far. I now have separated the following layers:

Application
-----------
User Interface
-----------
Business Logic

By doing this, I will be able to add additional applications and additional UI 
functions to those applications simply by enhancing my Java classes. The 
business logic, which does not translate well to Java, is written in RPG.

All definitions of the applications are done in traditional AS/400 database 
files, and can be maintained by a green screen and DFU. The JavaServer Pages 
that display the data are 20-50 lines long, depending on how fancy I want to 
get.

Oh... the servers also support thick client applications, in case you need 
heavy desktop integration. Just in case.

What I like about this development environment is that, as I add more features, 
they are automatically enabled in all my older code.  e-RPG provides fast 
development at the price of a rather rigid architecture.  Or else why would the 
author of e-RPG be "tinkering" with Java?

I'm tinkering with Java right now.  The worst part, setting up Websphere.
*shudder*.  The second worst part, trying to sort out all the different
ideas of "how" to program in Java.  RPGers argue over the logic cycle.  Java
programmers have a lot more to argue about.  :)  (that's a good thing?)
