OK - the relevant question to ask is, if you lost the system and everything on it, how much would that impact you? You'll want redundant complete saves of the system in case you loose a disk and there is a media error on the first save set you try. It is fairly likely unless this is a system with very few disks that at least one disk will fail in the next few years. If that happened without any sort of protection, the system would probably crash, and probably need to be reloaded. If your last tapes are bad (and tapes have greater failure rates than disk), you'd have to go back to find a good one. That could mean loosing days worth of work (assuming nightly backup). In the best case, the system would be down for a day or more as you restored it. In the worst case, you might have to attempt restoring a few times, have to reload from the CD's, reapply the last cume and loose a day or two of work because the more recent tapes are bad. Basically, is the cost of a day of downtime in the next couple of years more or less than the cost of adding RAID to your system? How much worker's time would be wasted if you are down for a day?
