Yes, I tried to add "order by"  or "group by".  It really makes the
performance much worse.
But  it seems to me that "distinct"  sorts  selected records - though I'm
not quite sure.  I tried it on our files - the result is sorted.  So if you
need only sorted list of invoice numbers  - may be you don't need to add in
the sort criteria ?
