     Marty, regarding your question

     >We know you are using
     >an AS/400 on one end. Is it OS/400 FTP being used (as opposed to 3rd
     >party
     >FTP product), what is on the other end, and which side is the client
     >and
     >which is the server?

I can tell you this. For the process that we were discussing in the
shop yesterday, the 400 is the receiver and there are actually two
initiators. One is a VAN in which we get our EDI transactions from.
The other is a UNIX system.

The crux of the problem we were having was, we knew, file contention.
It just happened to start a general discussion on how FTP would handle
a lost connection and brought to light some wrong impressions that
people had of how the FTP application worked in general. A few of us
were correct in our stand, but none of us here are experts, and I
could find nothing explicit in the manuals to point to and say 'see,
there it is.' Now I can get the 'losing sides' to honor the bet -
     mmmm, donuts.

     thanks for the info,
     jw
