Boy - that must have been an old one.  I went through the firmware 
upgrades on the early 7852's about 4 years ago I think.
I had opened a problem report regarding several connectivity issues with 
the early models and ended up in direct contact with the developer testing 
out some of the changes.
So long ago I had forgotten about it !  :-)

Thanks Neil and Patrick, I found the problem. It's the 7852 needing a 
firmware upgrade. It has a problem handling the 7857's 19.2 connection. I 
took my IBM OPTIONS modem (7852) to my client and it hooked up with the 
other 7852 on the first try.
