Alan, IMHO as long as IBM is cashing your hardware support checks, they are guaranteeing the parts availability at whatever service level is in your contract. After that, third-party support vendors take over so you can usually get support for quite a while even after IBM stops. Incidentally, if you switch to a 170 to avoid a disk crash, I hope you get a better one than I did. We've had 4 DASD hits in about a year on the 10Krpm units.
