I did not see the original post, but I do pass user name in several programs.

RTVJOBD gets current &USER of the job & other info on that &USER can come 
from RTVUSRPRF for example

then some RPG program has *ENTRY PARM in which we pass several fields.

&USER is usually for page header purposes
other fields for limiting what is to be processed

For example when reading through secondary files, we only want the data on a 
particular range of warehouses
