Actually the QIC4DC format from the 6382 is readable by the 6383 (13/26GB QIC, and the 6386 (25/50GB QIC). The 6382, 6383 & 6386 can also read the QIC2DC format from the 6381. (The 6382 can also write QIC2DC). The 6382 is a compacting device, so for single-system use you should of cause use *QIC4DC. However "The IBM QIC-4GB-DC tape media supported by the 4GB 1/4" Cartridge Unit is not supported in any other QIC drive", so for data interchange you should probably use *QIC4GB.
