I also have not done this in several years but remember part of it.
Save the S/36 program to tape, in which the method of save makes a 
difference.  We were restoring FILES and SOFTWARE both.

Restore the S/36 program to OS/400 using NOT the standard OS/400 restore 
options but something like RESTORE36 using the IBM 3-4 letter abbreviations 
... it probably easier to GO CMDS36 to tickle memory of what the commands are.
We restored to Q36 files so we could remember what was still in 36 format.

Remember that S/36 programs generally used internal definitions of file 
layouts, many programs only identified the fields that they were using, so 
you can have a challenge getting at a complete layout.  There are some 
conversion tools to help you assemble layout of S/36 files for external 
definition, from collection of S/36 programs that each have only part of the 
story, and those tools will write programs for you to create the DDS, copy 
the data, and purge it of decimal data error problems.
