Just had a discussion with our technical group. Seems they are converting all of our network from Token Ring to Ethernet. Quoted several reasons. Among them is the fact that many manufacturers of computer technology are dropping Token Ring. New MAU's, switches, cards and what not are either impossible to find, extremely long lead times, or not adopting higher speeds and other features. Cost of equipment was a significant factor. And with the new switches, collision is no longer a factor. Anyone else seeing this? Sidenote: They told me that they were going to upgrade my PC (and I didn't even make a request!). I told them the project I wanted to do after they told me about the upgrade. Now instead I will be getting an even more souped up PC with a port to the 100MB switch. This will become the third PC in my cubicle. When the project is done it will become my primary PC and my old one will go to someone else. This is not the first time they've done this kind of upgrade for me - just because they thought I'd use it. God I love it here! Rob Berendt ================== Remember the Cole! Jeff Crosby <jlcrosby@fwi.com> To: Midrange Mailing List <MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com> Sent by: cc: owner-midrange-l@mi Subject: New Laser Printers drange.com 12/12/00 04:54 PM Please respond to MIDRANGE-L The time has come for us to get some new laser printers for attachment to our AS/4 . . . er, e(logo)server iseries. Our current lasers are Anzac 3017s, which are HP Laserjet 4si with a twinax interface. The printers were once wonderful but are simply worn out. Anzac used to be a good company, but their service has gotten so terrible over the last couple of years that I would not use Anzac printers if they _gave_ them to us. I'm interested in something HP, probably, unless someone convinces me otherwise. No more twinax, I want cat 5 cabling. I assume that printers still require an 'interface' card to work properly with an AS/40 . . . &#@*%#+ I mean an e(logo)server iseries. They need to be heavy duty printers, probably 2 of them, in the 20ppm range. What printers are you using these days? What do you recommend? Thanks. -- -Jeff The opinions expressed are my own and not necessarily the opinion of my company.
