what do you consider cheap?  and are the tapes 3490 or 3490e?  

we have a drive that processes 3480/3490/3490e tapes, and i believe it
was about $10,000 when we got it 3 years  ago.  we got it from a company
called me2 in colorado.  in addition, you have to have an adaptor card
in your as/400 for an external tape drive.  

i don't know what those drives cost now, but i doubt that even today,
you're looking at much less than that if you need 3490e.
