Well our firewall is in this general category (Sonicwall) and it allows you to specify if PING is allowed or not. For testing purposes we have enabled it. As I noted in my original message, PING is working fine to any IP address inside the firewall _except_ the AS/400. The AS/400 can however be happily pinged from within the firwall or via the VPN.
