I might be misunderstanding what you are trying to do but here goes anyway!

We have GEAC System 21 on the AS/400 and SQL Server 7 on NT. We copy a large
number of the System 21 files onto the SQL Server each night for historical
reporting and decision support work.

We use Data Transformation Services in SQL to pull the data across, with
VBScripts to convert the 7 digit dates into datetime values. I create views
as required over the individual tables.

Last night's run took around 9 hours for 11,336,954 records.
