Another issue is the idea of upward compatibility & the desire to continue using stuff that works fine ... if it aint broke why fix it ... well a new OS upgrade can break it. We write software & it works. We add views to solve perfomance problems & in association with modifications to add new features & it works. We have some software package that is 99% written in some collection of languages & features ... it makes sense to remain expert in that collection. We upgrade to a new OS & we lose IBM support for some products that now only have minimal IBM customers or IBM thinks can make more money by going in different direction, so we convert to a non-IBM platform, or to new IBM offering, or remain on obsolete OS.
