Well then Jim I have to say you are a better and faster programmer than I.
I went with the third party approach. Could not justify the time I
estimated. Having never done TCP/IP it took me 2 month to write a TCP/IP
socket client, about 2 weeks was specific to the application and the other 6
weeks to the communications. After that it took me 2 month to write a
TCP/IP socket server. I had to learn how to translate C to RPG for the
Prototypes. Most RPG programmers on the AS400 that I know, don't now C or
Communication programming. Perhaps someone else can do it faster and others
will need more time. How many know how to find the RFC's or even what they
are? For a Socket Guru that knows both C and RPG I guess they would need
less time. Also how many people can work on one thing at a time. Please
let me know, I would apply in an instant.

2 months for someone who knows TCP/IP and sockets? I can't think of any
reason it
could possibly take this long. Especially when I wrote my own FTP client on
a PC
using Delphi in about 2 days (half the time was researching it).

If I needed to do this I would guesstimate 3 weeks. One week to track down
and
learn how to do sockets in RPG. One week to modify this program and get it
to
actually work and log into an FTP server. Then the third week to look up
the
FTP RFC and work out all the bugs.

If I could find everything easily, maybe 2 weeks.

Regards,

Jim Langston
