2 months for someone who knows TCP/IP and sockets? I can't think of any reason it could possibly take this long. Especially when I wrote my own FTP client on a PC using Delphi in about 2 days (half the time was researching it). If I needed to do this I would guesstimate 3 weeks. One week to track down and learn how to do sockets in RPG. One week to modify this program and get it to actually work and log into an FTP server. Then the third week to look up the FTP RFC and work out all the bugs. If I could find everything easily, maybe 2 weeks. Well to write your own FTP client is not all that difficult. You must first understand all the requirements for FTP and the error messages. If all you want to do is connect, logon, list directory, get, put and close, you can write the FTP client to do this. It can take you upwards of 3 months. If you are all ready a TCP/IP sockets guru, maybe on 2 months. There are third party packages out their that do this for you. Two I can think of are ZMOD/400 and Alliance FTP manager. Each approach the problem with IBM's FTP client from different angles.
