What about something along this line (if FMTSRC doesn't work for you): 

Read the file,writing a record to one of 26 files, based upon the first 
letter.  Most of the files would certainly be of manageable size by then, 
and the few remaining too-huge files could be run through the same process 
based upon their first 2 characters. Not pretty, but if the hugeness is an 
issue this solution would resolve that issue.
