If you are faced with a programming solution, now would be a good time
to make it a bit more modular.

Although we have many programs where you can -request- a customer
lookup, there is only one program that -does- the lookup.  You could
write the unified inquiry with logging then implement it's use one by
one to the other programs.

I know this doesn't help you with your immediate need, but may make it
easier to implement future needs.
