Here's an excerpt from program we use in emergencies to do a direct read from tape that looks like it could be modified to suit your purpose. The program reads from qtape to the data structure and writes to outfile using exception output. When we call the program we override outfile to the appropriate file. The record lengths are chosen to be arbitrarily large.
