Well, use externally defined data structures to define the formats, read by
FILE name not format name, then move the character buffer to the correct
format.  You can use the IO feedback area or indicators to recognize which
format you received.

Let the better ideas flow!

I am sure that many years ago I knew how to read multiple files with
differing formats in a generic RPG program without getting undefined
format errors, but, if I did, I have forgotten how.  I have tried
several tricks, without success.  Any ideas please?
