And the original question was something like, "how can I write command files
similar to DOS .bat files?"  That question is sufficiently vague and the
concepts sufficiently disjoint to require a broader interpretation of
command language scripts or programs than just "compiled" CL.

Not quite.  It may not matter to the original poster, but one can indeed
place CL commands in a source member and SBMDBJOB or STRDBRDR and process
them.

(place these in QCLSRC member type CL)
// BCHJOB TEST
SNDMSG 'IT WORKS' BUCK
// ENDBCHJOB

SBMDBJOB FILE(QCLSRC) MBR(BATCHJOB)

The point being if we step away from the preconceived notion that CL must
follow the rigid "design, edit, compile, debug" strictures of a compiled
language, we can open up to new ideas.  HLL programs can write to a source
member...
