Hi John, While working the IBM midrange since about 1985, I have never attended COMMON, as my employers never perceived the benefit to be worth the expense. Local seminars were more palatable (less time & $$). I'm on my own now and would have to justify the cost, down time, and time away from family. I'm sure COMMON would be educational and fun, and meeting folks face to face would be exciting, but it's hard to justify the tradeoff. Thirty years ago the most efficient and effective way to evaluate products, get some education, and establish business contacts was the convention model. That's not really the case any more. Janet Kruger wrote: "Not many have joined us for discussion over in the COMMON Town Hall Meeting at http://www.as400network.com/forums/Main.cfm?CFApp=70. COMMON is celebrating 40 years of very rich history in Baltimore this November. Maybe that is enough, and it should just go away gracefully? Janet Krueger, in Rochester, probing the list to see if people care..." I care about how OS/400, the market place, and my skill set all work together. COMMON cares about these things too, but is not as compelling as internet age alternatives. -DaveK ----- Original Message ----- From: <jpcarr@TREDEGAR.COM> To: <MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com> Sent: Friday, September 01, 2000 6:52 PM Subject: Re: The relevance of COMMON (was Penton to buy Duke - News400 magazine) > > David > > Have you ever attended COMMON? > I love Midrange-L also (for a couple of years) But it isn't COMMON. > Even David Gibbs attends COMMON sometimes > > John Carr > --------------------- > > Hi Janet, Maybe the world is changing.
